How do I apply to be a Leadership AAHSA fellow?
AAHSA is no longer accepting applications for the 2009 Class of Leadership AAHSA. The online application for the Class of 2010 will be available in the spring of 2009. In the meantime, if you have questions about the Leadership AAHSA program, please contact Kirsten Jacobs, 202-508-9467.

Who are our emerging leaders?
Leadership AAHSA is seeking individuals from AAHSA provider member organizations who are "emerging leaders" within their own organizations. The type of individuals that fit into this "emerging leader" role may vary greatly from organization to organization. It is far more important for Leadership AAHSA applicants to demonstrate deep leadership potential within their organizations than it is for applicants to carry specific job titles. The program is available to anyone who works for an AAHSA member provider, irrespective of clinical or managerial experience.

What are Leadership AAHSA's three core tenets?
  1. Transformational leadership - leadership that elevates the aspirations and performance of organizations.
  2. Person-centeredness - a focus on the wellbeing of the individual person we serve as well as the individual staff member who provides that service.
  3. Innovation - changes at every level that create new ways of providing value.
How do we define Transformational Leadership?
The AAHSA Board has declared the present to be the "era of leadership" and has called upon the field to embrace the concepts of "transformational leadership." This vital approach to leadership is deeply embedded within relationships and is inclusive of methods that many AAHSA members already use successfully-such as "Level 5 Leadership" (Jim Collins), "Servant Leadership" (Robert K. Greenleaf) and "Transformational Leadership" (James McGregor Burns). Common to all transformational leaders is a fundamental, genuine commitment to:
  • Vision
  • Service
  • Self-awareness
  • Empowerment
  • Shared leadership
  • Respect for others
  • Increasing emotional intelligence
  • Collaboration in pursuit of impressive results
  • Disciplined approaches to leadership and management
Leadership AAHSA will offer a process of learning from a broad range of leadership experts and from our own peers to generate approaches that are powerfully effective in moving our field forward - all amid a great many challenges in aging services that will require nothing less than leadership that is transformational.

How is Leadership AAHSA financed?
This new and engaging learning program is made possible through multiple financial means:
  • A great amount of the costs associated with Leadership AAHSA are covered by the generous donations of AAHSA members and business associates who strongly believe in this program. A list of such donors were recognized at the 2007 AAHSA Annual Meeting and through various AAHSA publications.
  • A $5,000 tuition payment* is required from each Fellow's organization. In addition, lodging, travel expenses and some meals are also paid by each Fellow's organization (the costs incurred vary depending on the locations of the site visits). Please note that Fellows are responsible for the 2009 Annual Meeting registration fee.
  • AAHSA provides complimentary registrations for each Fellow to the 2008 Annual Meeting and 2009 Future of Aging Services Conference, both of which are part of the year-long program. In addition, some meals are provided onsite at no additional cost.
  • Fellows will need access to a personal computer for regular e-mail contacts and to participate in the Leadership AAHSA Online Community.

  • *Please Note: A limited number of tuition scholarships are available. For scholarship consideration, please write a statement of need in the online application.
What is an Action Learning Project?
One powerful component of Leadership AAHSA is an action learning project in which fellows champion innovations to bring back to their organizations. Projects from the first year ranged from developing a newer, more effective model of Alzheimer’s care to improving employee performance. But fellows gained more than an opportunity to develop innovations to benefit their organizations. Their action learning projects offered a chance to reflect individually and in groups, gaining insight through the wisdom of their peers, and strengthening their skills at influencing change.

How does Leadership AAHSA foster diversity?
Leadership AAHSA embraces diversity among both the fellows as well as those who to serve as experts to share with and teach the Fellows. The Class of 2007 represents diversity; i.e. gender, race, geography, the service continuum and career background.
  • Two-thirds of 2007 & 2008 participants are women; one-third are persons of color.
  • The Fellows hail from twenty different states and range in age from mid-20's to mid-50's.
  • They are employed by many types of aging services organizations including adult day care, assisted living, continuing care retirement communities, home and community based services, independent living, skilled nursing, etc.
  • They hold variety of leadership roles within their organizations (Administrator, CFO, COO, Director of Health Services, Director of Marketing, Director of Nursing, Executive Director, President & CEO, Vice President for Development and Planning, to name a few).
The overt focus on diversity has allowed the Class of 2007 Fellows to gain new and fresh perspectives about each other and the ever changing field aging services.

Leadership AAHSA - What Is The Quality First Connection?
The aging services field needs leadership and an organizational commitment to continuous quality improvement. AAHSA Quality First reinforces the commitment of not-for-profit aging services providers to maximize quality of care and quality of life for older adults. Quality First is helping our field achieve excellence and earn the public's trust.

Leadership AAHSA is most directly aligned with the following elements of Quality First.

# 1 Commitment - Leadership AAHSA is developing a new generation of leaders who are committed to providing healthy, affordable, ethical services to older adults in a place they call home. These new leaders will bring knowledge and energy to their communities, states and AAHSA for years to come. Leadership AAHSA teaches transformational leadership through intimate dialogue with and case study examples of aging services leaders and experts. The program exemplifies transformational leadership by providing an open and trusting environment to share personal and professional challenges, brainstorm and foster diversity of thought.

# 3 Leading Edge Care and Services - The program exposes Fellows to innovative models of person-centered care and best practices through shared learning and education vehicles such as the AAHSA Annual Meeting and Exposition and the Future of Aging Services conference. During five face-to-face meetings, Fellows visit exemplary aging services providers and learn about their initiatives to provide quality care and services.

# 6 Human Resources Development - Leadership AAHSA emphasizes person-centeredness on behalf of those providing services in addition to those receiving services. The program recognizes that the perspective and participation of front-line workers in organizational decision-making are vital to culture change. Sponsoring organizations will not only benefit from their Fellow's professional development but also in how that Fellow will give back through mentorship, coaching and shared learning for all levels of the organization.

# 9 Research Findings and Education - Leadership AAHSA is a forum in which the latest applied research, best practices, and innovations are shared to further enhance all aspects of professional development, networking, and education throughout the program.
